Troubleshooting and User Guides
How can I connect Piranha via Bluetooth to Windows PC or tablet?
This is a walk-through video of how to connect your Piranha (Red or Black) via Bluetooth to your windows laptop PC or tablet.
Problem connecting Black Piranha via Bluetooth using Windows 10?
Windows may sometimes block Bluetooth devices from being found. If Ocean fails to get your Piranha wireless connected to your Windows 10 Tablet or Laptop, a new pairing in Windows is then required.
This video will take you through a workaround of how to connect your Piranha when you have a problem using Bluetooth ande Windows 10 together with the Black Piranha.
Application & Measurements
How can the dose be accumulated over several exposures with the Piranha?
There are a number of ways to do this with Ocean. One way is to choose TIMED MODE and make a single measurement to include all the exposures. The result will be your accumulated value. The second option allows the user to make any number of measurements and simply add the values at the end of the exposure sequence.
Does RTI have a special calibration for GE AMX4 measurements?
Yes, and it standard on all Piranha 500 and 600 systems. This calibration has been available for RTI products since 2007.
Why is the 1 point method to prefer when measuring CTDIw with the CT Dose Profiler?
By using the 1 point method you only need one exposure in the center hole for each CTDIw estimation. This is possible by using know relations in the dose distribution between the center hole and the 4 periphery holes. This relation is defined by the "k-factor".
Just making one exposure instead of five saves both time and the X-ray equipment.
How accurate is the k-factor?
The k-factors have been extracted from statistics during many years from measurements of the CTDIw and CTDI100 measured with ion chambers on different scanners.
The variation between different scanners and bowtie filters are less than ±5%. This difference gives less distribution to the expanded uncertainty than influences by measuring the 5 periphery holes individually. Factors that add inaccuracy when measuring in the periphery holes are energy dependencies, low signal and high dynamic variation in signal during the tube rotation. When using the CT dose profiler in the periphery holes during a scan the pitch has to be less than 0,5 to avoid loss of information for the dose estimation.
Can I check the k-factor myself?
Yes. You can easily extract you k-factor for each of your CT scanners by using previous measurements with ion chambers.
RTI strongly recommends the 1 point method to be used for CTDIw measurements with the CT Dose Profiler. The method saves time and gives a higher accuracy than the 5 point method, either using a pencil ion chamber or the CT Dose Profiler.
Can one and the same Piranha unit measure both Radiography, Mammography, CT, and Dental?
Yes, the Piranha can (depending on model) measure on all different kind of X-ray equipment. But there are also simpler models available to a lower cost.
Can the Piranha be used with Ion Chambers?
Yes, by using the RTI Chamber Adapter you can connect ion chambers to the Piranha. Please check with us to make sure that the Ion chamber you intend to use is fully suited for the chamber adapter.
Does the Piranha store any measurements?
Yes, all measurements made with the Piranha can be saved with the Ocean software. It allows the user to create templates for easy measurements. For more information, see the Ocean info.
Is it possible to use the Piranha 657 for dental/panoramic measurements?
Yes, the Piranha 657 can measure dental/panoramic units. The user simply selects the Dental or Panoramic option in the display. When using the “Position Check” function you are sure that the Piranha is accurately placed and the Piranha detector area is uniformly radiated. For easy and accurate Panoramic measurements – use our optional “Panoramic Dental Holder”.
Measured values can include kVp, time, dose, dose rate, TF, and HVL. Waveforms are shown instantly. Dental measurement capabilities are standard on all 200, 500, and 600 series Piranhas.
Is it possible for the Piranha 657 to communicate directly to its MAS-1, MAS-2, and MAS-3 Probes?
Yes, any RTI MAS Probe can be used simultaneously with the Piranha during an X-ray exposure, making it possible to display up to 8 parameters at one time: kVp, time, dose, dose rate, TF, HVL, mA, and mAs. Waveforms for kV, dose and mA waveforms are available with each exposure.
Is the kV accuracy dependent on dose?
The Piranha can measure the correct kV on very low dose rates and for the whole kV spectrum. For example, the Piranha can measure 43 kV at a dose rate of 30 mR/min at 25 µA consistently and with no special set-up.
How does the Piranha 657 measure HVL in a single exposure?
The Piranha has multiple solid-state detectors that measure simultaneously during any exposure. Some of these detectors are dedicated to measure kV and Total Filtration (TF). The correct HVL is calculated by using the measured kV and TF values. HVL in a single exposure is available for R/F, Mammo, Dental, and CT.
The user can also measure HVL the conventional method using aluminum sheets. Simple, ready-to-use HVL applications are included in both Ocean and QA-Browser software.
Is it possible to measure many parameters in just a few exposures?
Yes, the Piranha can measure a large variety of parameters (kV, dose, time, HVL, total filtration, frames, dose rate, frame rate, etc.) – all in just ONE exposure!
Do I need to connect the Piranha to any communication or power supply cable?
No, RTI uses Bluetooth in our instruments. This eliminates unnecessary cables and makes the setup easier and faster.
All RTI instruments are battery powered – so no external power supply needed.
How long is the Piranha battery life time?
A fully charged Piranha can be used for up to 15 hours, and can be charge and used simultaneously. The Piranha can be charged via a regular wall outlet or the supplied USB cable connected to a laptop.
How can the frame-rate of a fluoroscopic exposure be measured with the RTI Piranha?
Simply choose “Fluro and Frame-rate” with Ocean software or “Pulsed Fluoro” with the Piranha QA Browser. This will work with both the Piranha and/or its external dose detector. With Ocean you can also measure a lot of other frame parameters like: total frame count, dose/frame, pulse width etc.
Will the kV still display if the dose is less than 5 R?
Yes. The Piranha can measure as low as 30 mR/min (or even lower). Basically, as long as the Piranha can measure dose rate, the Piranha measures correct kV.
I have a Red Piranha, is it possible to convert it to a Black Piranha?
All Red Piranhas can be upgraded to full Black Piranha functionality, including the new Black shell. Please contact your local distributor for more information and current upgrade prices.
The Cobia Family
Is the positioning in the X-ray field crucial for the Cobia Smart and Flex?
The cobia can be positioned in any direction as long as the x-ray field covers the whole Cobia detector area.
What Windows versions can the RTI software be used with?
RTI software is optimized for Windows 7, 8 & 10 but it is also possible to use Windows Vista.
