Measuring kV, dose & HVL in Mammography

Clinical mammography systems typically use the 18-39 kV range for small-field or full-field digital mammography (FFDM).
Contrast-enhanced spectral mammography (CESM) is a technique that combines mammography with contrast enhancement (typically in the 40-49 kV range), to combine images for enhanced cancer detection / diagnosis.

Most modern systems can perform both 2D and 3D modes. Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is an example of a 3D mode in which X-ray images are taken from multiple angles, to enhance the depth perspective.

Mammography Application Coverage

  • Mammography QA applications include 2D modes (full-field digital mammography), 3D modes (Tomosynthesis) and Spectral Mammography.
  • Spectral mammography combines “normal” mammography images (18-39kV) with contrast-enhanced images (40-49kV), requiring a Probe that can handle the full range.
  • Typical measurements include kV, dose, dose rate, exposure time & half value layer (HVL). These can be measured with- or without- the compression paddle.
  • Average glandular dose (AGD) / mean glandular dose (MGD) is also typically calculated (EUREF or ACR protocols).
Other measurements in an X-ray routine can include X-ray Scatter & leakage measurements, or measuring mA/mAs from the generator.

Key Features & Benefits

Best ever performance in Mammography

Unlike other sensors, Mako Mammo covers entire clinical kV range from 18-49kV; no need to switch sensor above 40kV when measuring CESM. Mako Mammo has best ever kVp accuracy (±1.5% kV uncertainty), unique in the market, while also handling the latest X-ray systems on the market. The advanced detector design is capable of measuring across spectral mammo (e.g., TiCEM; Titanium contrast enhanced mammography) and tomosynthesis (3D mode), with the widest ever angular measurement range. The intuitive solution means there is no need to inform about compression paddle, simply place and measure for accurate readings.

X-ray Diagnostic Mammography

Next generation kV/dose meter for high accuracy mammography QA

In mammography screening, high-quality diagnostic images are required to ensure effective breast cancer detection. X-ray quality assurance plays a pivotal role in this process, ensuring that image quality is maximized for enhanced interpretation of mammograms, and that patient dose is minimized during examination.

As Full Field Digital Mammography (FFDM) is used in screening the population, patient dose for each image is a vital factor, and therefore having the right QA solution is important; that is where Mako comes in.
